Team Biographies

Hee Bong Hyun MS, RD - Resident District Manager 

Born in Seoul, Korea Hee Bong Hyun brings over 25 years of large-scale operational leadership to the dining services program at San Francisco State University. She earned her Master’s Degree from New York University with a focus on Human Nutrition. Hee Bong has served as a preceptor for Sodexo’s Dietetic Internship program, Chairwoman of Sodexo’s National Pan-Asian Employee Resource Group, and most recently as a Bio Ethics Fellow and Human Nutrition Instructor. As a registered dietitian for over 25 years, she brings a deep passion for connecting people through food and nutrition.

Gerard Rangel - Executive Chef 

Executive Chef Gerard Rangel joined Sodexo in 2006 after successfully leading many restaurants into world-class status. Classically trained in French, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisines, he graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in San Francisco where he also had the privilege to tour France and Italy learning several inside-trade skills. Now as the Executive Chef of San Francisco State University Dining Services, Chef Gerard will bring a new sensation to collegiate dining. He is well-known for his use of seasonally-available ingredients and gastronomy techniques.

Ivy Hung - Director of Resident Dining

 Ivy Hung, Director of Resident Dining, joined Sodexo in 2009.  Ivy brings with her an extensive operational knowledge and a diverse blend of foodservice leadership experience in high volume university and corporate dining, as well in the private sector with restaurants, hotels and destination resorts across the country and in Asia. Before arriving at SFSU, Ivy’s prior campus dining experience includes leading the culinary operations at George Washington University in Washington DC, overseeing resident dining program, retail service as well as high profile catering operations.  In addition to her passion for sustainability focused menu and operational planning, Ivy is a strong advocate and supporter of “Eat Well, Live Well” and mindfulness in everyday life. 

Zion Thomson- Unit Marketing Coordinator

Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Zion Thomson has worked on a multitude of different community based marketing projects. From large fundraisers, to gallery openings, music events, and video campaigns, Zion has put emphasis on working with the community to reach the best outcome for the people.  Zion has a huge passion for food and culture.  He has been working in food service since he was thirteen and has gotten to travel across North America and Europe, getting to learn and appreciate how cuisine and culture are intermingled. As the Unit Marketing Coordinator, Zion will continue to integrate his passions for community, culture, artistic media, food, and marketing to create the most enjoyable student dining experience possible.
